Leo Leo Vardanyan is an abstract artist whose work is deeply spiritual and meditative. His craftsmanship is a central part of his artistic practice, and though he is primarily a painter, he also works with wood, video, performance and most recently photography.
The principal subject of the series is not the view from Leo’s bedroom window, but rather the translucence of the curtain, its movement in the summer wind, and the changing hues of light that filter through depending on the time of day. Leo’s “Window” series embodies visually what French philosopher Roland Barthes famously observed in his final text, Camera Lucida: “a photograph is always invisible: it is not it that we see…the photograph is never distinguished from its referent”.
