BERGE SETRAKIAN: "WE ALWAYS SUPPORT THE STATE"

  • June 07, 2019
  • 11:30

Nouvelles d’Arménie Magazine: How did AGBU experience and perceive the Velvet Revolution?
Berge Sétrakian: We followed the events with a lot of interest. It is indeed a popular movement unprecedented in the history of modern democracies. This change of popular upheaval also affects a lot of countries once referred to as the free world. 20 - 25 years after the fall of the Soviet Union, the people are asking questions and demanding accountability from their leaders. This ancient world has been confronted with a wave of popular discontent starting with the Brexit vote and continuing with the elections of Trump and Macron. It’s a form of questioning the traditional political establishment. This phenomenon has also left more or less of a stain on Italy, Austria, Hungary and elsewhere. These events are a result of the rejection of migration towards Western countries but more so, from the general social crisis, related to the increasing wealth gap between the richest and the poorest. This wealth gap is generating frustration and anger. Armenia has not escaped this phenomenon and the situation in the country had only been aggravated by corruption. It’s not like Armenia has a monopoly on this—this, alas, plagues the whole world. But the leaders could not cope with it. This was too much for the people and they said: enough!...

"FROM MY WINDOW" A SOLO EXHIBIT

 leo

Leo Leo Vardanyan is an abstract artist whose work is deeply spiritual and meditative. His craftsmanship is a central part of his artistic practice, and though he is primarily a painter, he also works with wood, video, performance and most recently photography.

The principal subject of the series is not the view from Leo’s bedroom window, but rather the translucence of the curtain, its movement in the summer wind, and the changing hues of light that filter through depending on the time of day. Leo’s “Window” series embodies visually what French philosopher Roland Barthes famously observed in his final text, Camera Lucida: “a photograph is always invisible: it is not it that we see…the photograph is never distinguished from its referent”.

CONVERGENCE: A COLLECTIVE EXHIBIT

CONVERGENCE EXHIBITION BANNER

Convergence
A Collective Exhibit

March 15 - 30, 2019
Official opening: March 15, 18:30

Convergence:
The tendency of unrelated organisms to evolve similar characteristics under similar environmental conditions.

Convergence is a collective exhibit that features seventeen young artists working with divergent techniques, styles and subjects. The exhibition illustrates a dialogue where different approaches intersect and merge - sometimes in conflict and other times in harmony. Their common ground is not immediately visible. Besides sharing a generation- and with it, an education at the Yerevan Academy of Fine Arts- today, these working artists share a distinct network. From their studios, to the exhibition halls of the Artists’ Union, to international galleries across Europe and the post-Soviet space, these artists cross paths in different contexts. They have shaped a resourceful community that has learned to thrive in the liminal space between institutions and makeshift platforms, enabling their international exhibition in the face of a lack of infrastructural support.

This shared reality represents both a physical and theoretical context whose conditions have woven a subtle, yet palpable, thread across their works: a tendency toward narrative compositions, bold line, anxious undertones, and a primary color palette that recalls the modernists before them. Their classical training is evident, yet a playfulness and propensity towards experimentation can be seen in the unique choice of materials (collage, synthetic resins, artist prints) and their manipulation into distinct spacial constructs. Convergence reveals a dissonant but harmonious dialogue that sheds light on the individual artists and the collective as a whole.

Exhibited artists:
Arman Habardzumyan
Arman Ohanyan
Guy Ghazanchyan
Hakob Vardanyan
Hayduk Smbatyan
Hayk Ghazaryan

ARMENIA IN THE INTERNATIONAL ARENA AND AN ASSESSMENT

  • April 20, 2018
  • 12:21

The Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) Armenia and the American University of Armenia (AUA) are co-hosting a lecture series dedicated to the centenary of the First Armenian Republic.

As the small Armenian state expanded to the prewar borders of so-called “Russian Armenia” and planned for the realization of the exalted slogan of “Free, Independent, United Armenia,”Armenian diplomats and Armenophile groups were striving on five continents to gain support for the Republic. The response of the Great Powers was critical in that endeavor, and it was a question of whether they would commit the resources necessary to honor their wartime pledges regarding the future of the Armenian people. The collapse of the First Armenian Republic in December 1920 gave the answer to that question. As the Republic passed into history, strongly divergent views became manifest regarding its actual significance. In this centennial year, what might be a realistic appraisal? More here.

CREATING THE REPUBLIC’S INFRASTRUCTURE

  • April 18, 2018
  • 11:24

The Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) Armenia and the American University of Armenia (AUA) are co-hosting a lecture series dedicated to the centenary of the First Armenian Republic.
Amid difficulties in several minority-populated enclaves and constant hostilities along the borders, the Armenian government attempted to create the framework of a democratic republic.

This lecture and discussion will focus on the measures taken to lay the foundations of a republican form of government, while also dealing with internal tensions, not only among the several Armenian political parties, but also within the dominant party Dashnaktsutiun, The role of the Diaspora also came into play, as Armenian partisanship, regionalism, and dualism threatened the future of the Republic and of the Armenian people itself. But by 1920, significant progress had been made and there were signs of hope, both domestically and internationally. More here.

MAY 28: THE UNCHARTED COURSE TOWARD INDEPENDENCE

  • April 16, 2018
  • 15:43

The Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) Armenia and the American University of Armenia (AUA) are co-hosting a lecture series dedicated to the centenary of the First Armenian Republic.
May 28 has become the symbol of resurrected Armenian statehood after centuries of foreign dominion. As it happened, Armenian independence in 1918 may have developed into a virtue born out of sheer necessity.

This initial lecture and discussion focuses on the conditions during World War I which made the road to independence extremely treacherous and the challenges facing the desperate Armenian leadership seemingly insurmountable. But somehow the Republic managed to survive until the end of the war when strong rays of hope spread over the slopes of Mount Ararat. More here.

AGBU Exhibitions is pleased to start 2018 with “Carnet de Voyage”, a solo show of works by Marina “ANIRAMSKY” Fedorovsky (Paris, France). Ines, his mistress, devoured by jealousy, and Slimane, a hound-slew, will combine their efforts, one to get Pepe out of his den, the other to destroy this love ...

AGBU Armenia cordially invites you to an enjoyable musical evening with the Cadence Ensemble.

The Cadence Ensemble was formed in February 2004 by five outstanding Armenian instrumentalists initially to perform the works by Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992).

Arrangements of many famous works, including classical, world music and pop are now included in the ensemble’s musical menu. Also included are composed pieces dedicated to the ensemble and its members.

Cadence has enjoyed international exposure through live broadcast of its concerts, and the production of several CDs and DVDs. As a result the Cadence Ensemble is invited to perform in Russia, as well as European, Asian, Gulf and Middle East countries.

  • 10:53

On July 14, AGBU Armenia hosted a press briefing and a public discussion to present AGBU Europe’s campaign for the European Union to engage in Artsakh (Nagorno Karabakh) Republic. The speakers - Artsakh Human Rights Defender Ruben Melikyan, AGBU Armenia Executive Director Talar Kazanjian, AGBU Europe Director Nicolas Tavitian (live from Brussels), and Coordinator of the Federation of Armenian Organizations in Belgium Shahnur Minasyan - presented the goals of the campaign and how the support of the relevant institutions and the general public can help achieve those goals.

For 28 years, the population of Nagorno-Karabakh have been living under blockade. This is the only territory where EU officials never go and where Europe provides no aid. Nagorno-Karabakh’s isolation is unique. The EU provides aid to 150 countries around the World. It also provides aid to people in many unrecognized territories such as Abkhazia, Transnistria and Northern Cyprus regardless of their status. This policy is called “engagement without recognition”.

Hrazdan Tokmajian collected famous Aleppo-Armenian photographer Nourhan Balian’s photographs of Islamized Armenians after the Armenian Genocide, who found shelter with the Bedouins. The book contains a lot of photos depicting their everyday life, as well as the desert of Der-Zor with its surrounding. You are cordially invited to participate in the “Desert’s Sorrowful Melody: Bedouin Armenians in Nourhan Balian’s Photographs” book presentation.
