On March 24, 2009 President of the Republic of Armenia Serge Sargsyan received the President of the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) Berge Setrakian. As the presidential press office informed Armenpress highly assessing the patriotic and nation-preserving activities of AGBU, President Sargsyan said that it is very pleasant to hear about new projects. AGBU President Berge Setrakian presented the current activities of the Union and future plans. AGBU has initiated new programs the main purpose of which is the strengthening of ties between the homeland and the new generation of Diasporan-Armenians. The interlocutors also spoke about the preservation of Diaspora’s potential, unification of the Diaspora around national goals, preservation of Armenian identity, educational and other issues, emphasizing the important role of the newly-established Diaspora Ministry in Armenia-Diaspora correlations.

HIS HOLINESS KAREKIN II RECEIVED PRESIDENT OF AGBU BERGE SETRAKIAN

On March 25, Catholicos of All Armenians His Holiness Karekin II received Mr. Berge Setrakian, President of the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU). His Holiness expressed gratitude for the patriotic activities of AGBU and the services offered to the Homeland, Diaspora and the Church. Catholicos Karekin II also conveyed his appreciation personally to Mr. Setrakian for his devoted soul and heartfelt approach towards the Armenian Church and the Holy See St. Etchmiadzin. His Holiness and Mr. Setrakian spoke about the strong cooperation between the Armenian Apostolic Church and the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU), discussed the joint educational and social programs. In his speech the AGBU President thanked His Holiness for appreciation, underscored the important role of the Armenian Church and priesthood in the spiritual and national life of the Armenian people, and restated AGBU’s commitment to continue supporting the Armenian Church, mentioning also that AGBU and the Church have always jointly accomplished their mission in the Armenian people’s lives.

RA PRIME MINISTER TIGRAN SARGSYAN RECEIVED AGBU PRESIDENT BERGE SETRAKIAN

On March 23, 2009 Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Tigran Sargsyan received Berge Setrakian, President of the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU). The Prime Minister mentioned that the results of the implementation of agreements reached during their previous meeting are inspiring. Head of the RA Government thanked the AGBU and Berge Setrakian personally for the programs implemented in Homeland. According to Tigran Sargsyan these programs are especially important today since they help reduce the negative impact of the world financial and economic crisis and, at the same time, resist it. AGBU President Berge Setrakian believes that the activities of the Union should first of all be focused on Homeland, because through Homeland these programs help solve the issues of the whole Diaspora. During the meeting Tigran Sargsyan and Berge Setrakian also spoke about the importance of maintenance of Diaspora’s potential, unification of the Diaspora around national goals, joining the efforts of the Armenian state, church, benevolent and other organizations for the preservation of national identity, and solution of educational and other issues.

NA SPEAKER RECEIVES PRESIDENT OF AGBU

Speaker of Armenian parliament Hovik Abrahamian received the President of the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) Berge Setrakian who was accompanied by a member of AGBU Central Board Vasken Yacoubian and Director of AGBU Armenian Representation Ashot Ghazarian. Public relations department of the Armenian parliament told Armenpress that greeting the guests the NA Speaker pointed out the century-long patriotic activity of AGBU directed towards the preservation of Armenia, and noted that the AGBU has implemented a number of educational, cultural, social, humanitarian and church construction programs in Armenia. Hovik Abrahamian stressed the importance of the role of the Union in the issue of preservation of the spiritual heritage for the future generations. It has been noted that with the support of the philanthropists of the Union and efforts of Holly Etchmiadzin numerous churches have been restored, ecclesiastic schools – established. The speaker of the parliament greeted the programs which have been organized for Diaspora-Armenian youth aimed at discovering Armenia, recognition of traditions, culture and history and fortification of their relations with the homeland. AGBU President Berge Setrakian expressed gratification for the reception, presented the conducted activities and spoke about the future perspectives. The 120 branches and 27 cultural centers of AGBU which has more than 22 000 members now function in 29 states. In spite of the world financial crisis the AGBU tries to implement all the intended programs. Mr. Setrakian noted that the AGBU has already purchased an area of 1.5 hectares in Nork, where it intends to establish a students’ center which will continue the activity of Melkonian educational institute of Cyprus. More than 1000 Armenian students from different countries of the world may each year be educated there and it may become a world unique youth center of young Armenian specialists and intellectuals. In the Armenia-Diaspora cooperation the NA Speaker Hovik Abrahamian stressed the importance of the activity of the newly established Diaspora Ministry in the issue of working out and implementation of collaborative events, and expressed readiness always to support the Armenian General Benevolent Union in the issue of realization of its patriotic mission.

SYSTEMATIZED ATTITUDE TOWARDS PAN-NATIONAL ISSUES

Diaspora Minister of the Republic of Armenia Hranush Hakobian received Mr. Berge Setrakian, President of the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU), who was accompanied by AGBU Central Board member Vasken Yacoubian, Deputy Chairman of AGBU California Hayk Msrlian, AGBU Armenian Representation Director Ashot Ghazarian. The Minister welcomed the guests, expressed her gratitude for the beneficial activities of the AGBU both in Armenia and the Diaspora, briefly presented the Ministry’s programs aimed at preserving and uniting the nation, and which involve the realization of supreme directions of state policy in all the spheres of Armenia-Diaspora cooperation. AGBU President Berge Setrakian emphasized in his speech the importance of implementation of systematized strategy proceeding from national and state policies by the Ministry of Diaspora, and added that the balanced combination of state and national attitudes will definitely bring to the desired results. Mr. Setrakian also presented his attitude towards the issues of development of Armenia-Diaspora cooperation, underscored the youth activities, preparation of young leaders, and holding of educational internships in Motherland. The Minister stressed that the programs developed by the Ministry are based on the principles of the programs of RA President and RA Government, which are mainly aimed at the development of Armenia-Diaspora cooperation. As the RA Diaspora Ministry’s press and public relations department informed the Minister stated during the meeting that building correct and systematized relations with all the levels of the multi-layer Diaspora and taking constructive steps for the use of the whole potential of the Diaspora for the implementation of pan-national issues are the best guarantee of reaching our common goals. Mrs. Hakobian mentioned also that the RA Ministry of Diaspora first of all carries out a policy of Homeland-Diaspora cooperation, which envisages development and improvement of legislation, development of strategic and separate projects, which are already in process. AGBU President offered a joint implementation of certain programs, which was gladly accepted by the Minister.
