The 2nd round of the 10th Republican Interschool Chess Olympiad kicked off at Armenia’s Chess Academy on November 10, 2015. The Republican Interschool Chess Tournament is organized by Armenia’s Chess Academy and the RA Ministry of Education and Science. For 9 consecutive years the Armenian General Benevolent Union sponsors the tournament, which brings together more than 10,000 students from Armenia, Artsakh and Javakhk every year.

The ceremony was attended by Armenia’s Minister of Education and Science Armen Ashotyan, President of the Armenia’s Chess Academy Smbat Lputyan, AGBU Armenia Special Projects Coordinator Inessa Margaryan, parents, journalists and guests.

“Five years ago chess was officially included in the secondary school curriculum of the Republic of Armenia. Today, I am proud to announce that during these five years our students have demonstrated brilliant results in chess and have attained a number of victories” said RA Education and Science Minister Armen Ashotyan.

In his welcoming speech Smbat Lputyan, President of Armenia’s Chess Academy, said, “I am extremely glad that for nine years now we have been cooperating with the Armenian General Benevolent Union, which is the general sponsor of this tournament. We are doing our best to make the Championship more attractive and interesting every year”.

The tense competition to select the best team and individual players will last 8 months. This year the Championship is held for the 10th time. The winners of the first round go on to represent their school in the next rounds. The second round will continue for two more weeks and the winners will represent their community and then their region in the third round and the finals, scheduled for spring 2016.

“During these years AGBU has invested more than 200.000 US dollars in chess, and today we can proudly state that we have educated a new generation of highly qualified chess-players hoping that one day new chess giants will come out of them making everyone proud both in Armenia and the Diaspora”, said AGBU Armenia Special Projects Coordinator Inessa Margaryan.

Over the past nine years, AGBU has provided chess boards, chess clocks, chess literature, demonstration chess boards and projectors to more than 1000 schools of Armenia. The winning teams and players have received laptop computers, MP3 players, mobile telephones, USB sticks, tablets, monetary prizes and medals. Thanks to the Republican Interschool Chess Olympiad children have shown a significant interest towards this game over the last years. This tournament has already paved way for a number of children towards professional chess. Over 10.000 students, 7-17 years of age, from over 1000 schools of Armenia participate in this tournament every year.
