American University of Armenia organizes periodic meetings and discussions with today’s prominent individuals. On December 6th, the Manoogian Hall of the AUA Paramaz Avedisian Building gathered both students and the public for an engaging talk with one of the most successful Armenian businessmen, Ruben Vardanyan. The AUA administration, faculty, staff and students, as well as interested individuals attended the meeting. After the opening remarks, AUA President Dr. Armen Der Kiureghian invited Mr. Vardanyan to take the stage and share his thoughts and ideas about Armenia, today’s challenges, development prospects, future plans, as well as the role of both Armenia and Diaspora-based Armenians in the development of the country. He then answered questions raised by those present. Ruben Vardanyan initiated the Tatev Rebirth program in 2008. As a result, two years later, in 2010, Armenia’s Syunik region saw the opening of the Wings of Tatev ropeway. The Wings of Tatev was registered in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s longest non-stop reversible double track cable car. Vardanyan’s next ambitious project was the launch of the 190 million USD Dilijan International School. After four years’ of construction, the school opened its doors to students on October 11th, 2014. More details about this even on pages 18-19. Hours after the meeting at AUA, the details of Ruben Vardanyan’s next project were revealed during his meeting with NKR President Bako Sahakyan on December 7th. Vardanyan’s IDeA (Initiatives for Development of Armenia) Foundation has initiated the establishment of a eco-village in the territory of Noragyugh village of Artsakh’s Askeran region. The 50 million USD project will be an enormous contribution to the development of tourism in Artsakh. Construction will get underway in 2015.
