TUITION ASSISTANCE TO SYRIAN-ARMENIAN STUDENTS (VIDEO MATERIAL)

On October 2, the RA Diaspora Ministry, the RA Education and Science Ministry, the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation issued the following joint statement about launching a tuition-assistance program for Syrian-Armenians studying at Armenia’s colleges and universities. “Within the framework of programs supporting Syrian-Armenians who have moved to Armenia as a result of the latest developments in Syria, the RA Ministry of Diaspora, the RA Ministry of Education and Science, the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU), and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation announce the launch of a tuition assistance program for Syrian-Armenians studying at Armenia’s colleges and universities during the 2013-2014 academic year. AGBU, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the RA Government will contribute to the covering of tuition fees for the 2013-2014 academic year. A joint committee, comprised of representatives of the RA Diaspora Ministry, AGBU, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and Syrian-Armenian Relief Coordination Center NGO, has been established to organize the implementation of the project. The committee has already begun reviewing applications submitted by Syrian-Armenian students, and is operating out of the AGBU Armenia office.” Five days later, on October 7, a ceremony granting scholarship certificates to Syrian-Armenian students for the 2013-2014 academic year took place at the RA Ministry of Diaspora. Greeting the Syrian-Armenian students, RA Minister of Diaspora Hranush Hakobyan urged them to study hard and apply their knowledge for the prosperity of their homeland. Expressing gratitude to RA President Serzh Sargsyan and the RA Ministry of Diaspora for their ongoing support to Syrian-Armenians, AGBU Central Board Member and AGBU Middle East and Armenia Coordinator Vasken Yacoubian said, “It is our duty to compensate the Syrian-Armenian students’ tuitions and we do it with pleasure.” Students Alexan Kalaj, Hovig Keshishian, Hagop Hreshtagian and others expressed their gratitude to the Armenian Government, particularly the RA Ministry of Diaspora, and charitable organizations and promised to keep the country’s reputation high with their work and dedication. About 400 Syrian-Armenian students will receive tuition assistance.
