“DESERT’S SORROWFUL MELODY: BEDOUIN ARMENIANS IN NOURHAN BALIAN’S PHOTOGRAPHS” BOOK PRESENTATION

A compilation of photos called “Desert’s Sorrowful Melody: Bedouin Armenians in Nourhan Balian’s Photographs”, has recently been published by AGBU Syria District Committee and AGBU Fund (Armenia). The book was supposed to be published in Aleppo on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, but for known reasons it was published in Yerevan. Hrazdan Tokmajian collected famous Aleppo-Armenian photographer Nourhan Balian’s photographs of Islamized Armenians after the Armenian Genocide, who found shelter with the Bedouins. The book contains a lot of photos depicting their everyday life, as well as the desert of Der-Zor with its surrounding. You are cordially invited to participate in the “Desert’s Sorrowful Melody: Bedouin Armenians in Nourhan Balian’s Photographs” book presentation.

FRENCH CLASSICAL CINEMA *SEASON 1*

Alliance Française d’Arménie, AGBU Armenia & AFG Film Club - Institut Français cordially invite you to the screening of "Mister Klein" film, by Joseph Losey. (Staring Alain Delon, Jeanne Moreau, Francine Bergé)

Synopsis: Paris, January 1942. France is occupied by the Nazis. Robert Klein, apparently apolitical, is a well-to-do art dealer, Roman Catholic and Alsatian by birth, who takes advantage of French Jews who need to sell artworks to raise cash to leave the country. One day, the local Jewish newspaper, addressed to him, is delivered to his home. He learns that another Robert Klein who has been living in Paris, a Jew sought by the police, has had his mail forwarded to him in an apparent attempt to destroy his social reputation and make him a target of official anti-Semitism.

The film was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 1976 Cannes Film Festival but lost to Taxi Driver. However, Monsieur Klein did win the César Award for Best Film while Losey won the César Award for Best Director. Alexandre Trauner won the César Award for Best Production Design, and in addition the film was nominated for Césars in four other categories.

All films screened in original version (french) with English subtitles.
