THEATRICAL PERFORMANCES

From April 21-27, 2010 as part of the events dedicated to the 95th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, RA Diaspora Ministry and Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU), with the financial assistance of AGBU, jointly organized four theater performances of Franz Werfel’s “40 days of Musa Dagh” (director Armen Elbakian) and Pertj Zeytountsian’s “All rise, the court is in session” (director Tigran Gasparian) at G. Soundoukian State Academic Theater of Yerevan.

HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE, SPORT

In 1998 under the auspice of the RA President Kocharian the first Pan-Armenian athletic competitions kicked off in Yerevan. The event had a strong reverberation among young Diasporan Armenians, many of whom visited Armenia for the first time in their lives. Now these competitions are held every summer in Armenia and AGBU is among the sponsors of the Pan-Armenian games held in Armenia.

LITERATURE AND CULTURE

In 2004 AGBU in cooperation with the Union of Writers of Armenia started the sponsorship of the book series Armenian Poetry, Drama and Novel. The books, which will be available in late 2006 and early 2007, will include English translation of modern Armenian writers and poets.

TELEVISION

AGBU always had a vision of future. AGBU was faithful to its vision also in 2003 when it started the sponsorship of the TV project “On the ways of Diaspora”, a new program for Armenian TV with no precedent. During the two-year sponsorship dozens of programs were released and aired on Public TV.

RENOVATION AND CONSTRUCTION

In 1990 AGBU in cooperation with United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) started the construction of the Cold Food Storage in Gyumri. The construction completed in spring 1992. The facility stored 1000 metric tons of food shipped in by international humanitarian agencies, which were distributed weekly throughout the Northern region of Armenia, particularly to still earthquake damaged areas.

OPERA

In 2003 AGBU sponsored the new performance of the ballet Gayaneh. Previously Minas Avetissian has designed the stage decoration and costumes for this ballet. With time, though, they lost their brightness.

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMS AND CONFERENCES

AGBU has a long history of cooperation with the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia. In 2006 AGBU provided one-year scholarships to 12 students involved in the Master’s Degree Program in Humanities at the National Academy of Sciences. Earlier, AGBU sponsored several scientific programs. In order to support the scientific potential of Armenia, during many years AGBU also funded various publications of the works by the scientific staff of this institution.
