AGBU BUENOS AIRES WOMEN’S COMMITTEE VISITS ARMENIA

On September 15-27, for the third year in a row, members of the AGBU Buenos Aires Women’s Committee paid a visit to Armenia. As part of their trip to Homeland the members of the group took sightseeing tours and visited ancient Armenian historical and cultural monuments. On September 18th, members of the AGBU Buenos Aires Women’s Committee were received by His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians, at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. On that same day, the group also visited the AGBU Armenian Representation office, got acquainted with the Union’s programs carried out in Armenia and Artsakh, as well as the educational opportunities offered by the AGBU Armenian Virtual College.

“GILGAMESH” PRESENTED TO THE ARMENIAN AUDIENCE

After an extensive tour of Dubai, Beirut, Damascus, New York and Los Angeles, the Yerevan premier of “Gilgamesh” project took place at NPAK Center on October 19th. The Armenian audience was given the opportunity to enjoy the unique combination of music and illustration thanks to the Armenian General Benevolent Union, in particular AGBU Central Board member Vasken Yacoubian. The “Gilgamesh” project is the result of cooperation between two Syrian artists: Kevork Mourad, an Armenian by origin and Kinan Azmeh. In the emotional and artistic environment of NPAK the audience followed the impressive live illustrations by Mourad to the sounds of Azmeh’s clarinet.

UGAB JEUNES CARRIES OUT A NUMBER OF PROGRAMS IN ARMENIA

UGAB Jeunes (AGBU Youth France) headed by Raffi Der Agopian visited Armenia from August 1-30 to implement “Armenia, Land of Life” program. The group of 32 volunteers, ages 18-26, Armenian and French by origin, undertook a number of voluntary humanitarian, environmental, construction, healthcare and educational programs in different regions of Armenia and Artsakh. The group spent 10 days in Nagorno-Karabakh renovating the 2-floor youth center of Berdzor, Region of Kashatagh, NKR. It was built in 1999 by the Church and was later given to the youth of the region at their own request to serve as a cultural center.

“TUMO” CENTER FOR CREATIVE TECHNOLOGIES OPENS IN YEREVAN

“TUMO” center for creative technologies officially opened to the public on August 14th at Yerevan’s Ajapnyak district. Present at the opening ceremony were Presidents of the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh Serzh Sargsyan and Bako Sahakian, Mayor of Yerevan Karen Karapetian, other ministers and officials. Founded by AGBU Central Board Member Sam Simonian and his wife, Sylva, TUMO is designed to introduce students, ages 12 to 18, to a professional level of instruction in animation, web development, video game design, and digital video/audio through extensive after-school programs.

AGBU “ANTRANIK” SCOUT CAMP 2011 UNDERWAY

The fourth season of the AGBU “Antranik” Scout Camp kicked off on June 30th at AGBU’s private campsite in the village of Lermontovo, Lori region of Armenia, with over 350 scouts from the United States of America, Uruguay, Syria, Lebanon, Iran and Armenia. The camping season in three shifts will last until August 5th. With representatives of the AGBU Armenian office, the Very Rev. Fr. Torkom Tonikian, the Locum Tenens of the Diocese of Tavoush, officials from Lori marzpetaran participating, the fire ceremony of the first group of scouts from AGBU chapters of Tehran, Beirut and Montevideo took place on July 3rd marking the start of the fourth season of the AGBU “Antranik” Scout Camp.

HAIGAZOUN AND ANAHID VARTIVARIAN ZARTONK PRESS AWARD PRESENTED TO HOVIG EORDEKIAN

The 2010 “Haygazoun and Anahid Vartivarian Zartonk Press Award” was presented to Hovig Eordekian, Deputy Director of the AGBU Armenian Representation, at a solemn ceremony that took place in “Kersam Aharonian” hall of the Tekeyan Cultural Center of Beirut on June 16. Present at the award ceremony were former minister Jean Hovasapian, former member of the parliament and Chairman of the Founding Committee of Tekeyan Cultural Association Hagop Kassardjian, Ecumenical Officer of the Catholicosate of the Great House of Cilicia Archbishop Nareg Alemezian, First Secretary of the RA Embassy in Lebanon, members of the Lebanese-Armenian community, etc.

AGBU CONTINUES ITS SUPPORT OF THE “RENAISSANCE” INTERNATIONAL CONTEST-FESTIVAL OF MUSICIAN-PERFORMERS

On May 5-13th, the Vartan Atjemian Drama Theater of Gyumri hosted the “Renaissance” 3rd International Contest-Festival of Musician-Performers held under the high patronage of the First Lady of the RA Mrs. Rita Sargsyan. The organizers of the festival-contest are RA Culture Ministry, RA Diaspora Ministry, “Pyunik” All-Armenian Fund for Human Resources Development and the Gyumri branch of the Yerevan State Conservatory. “Renaissance” is held with the sponsorship of VivaCell-MTS, “South-Caucasian Railways” JSC, Electric Networks of Armenia, and AGBU.

AGBU CONTINUES ITS SUPPORT OF THE FRENCH UNIVERSITY IN ARMENIA

The official ceremony, granting scholarship certificates to the 22 best students of the French University in Armenia (UFAR) by the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU), took place at the French University on March 9th. This year the total amount of AGBU’s financial support to the University was 30,000 USD. AGBU and UFAR have been cooperating in a number of projects since 2004. Starting in 2007, within the framework of this cooperation, AGBU has supported the University in covering the tuition expenses for a select number of students.

AGBU PARTNERING WITH EDUARDO EURNEKIAN IN NKR “ONE LAPTOP PER CHILD” PROJECT

On January 26, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh, Mr. Ara Harutyunyan and Mr. Eduardo Eurnekian, an interna-tionally recognized Argentinean-Armenian businessman signed a memorandum of understanding, launching the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) program in the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh. The program will be implemented in partnership with the Armenian General Benevolent Union and the government of NKR. This program is aimed at providing laptop computers to elementary schools in Karabakh and connecting them to the Internet through wireless networks to be installed in their facilities.

AGBU ARMENIAN VIRTUAL COLLEGE’S INCREASING PROMINENCE IN THE EDUCATION PROCESS

On November 16-18, AGBU AVC participated in “Education and Career Expo 2010” 11th international specialized exhibition. Different institutes participated in the expo. The main goal of the expo was to provide information about the innovations in education and the most popular specializations in today’s labor market. On October 5, AGBU AVC also participated in the Education Fair on “European Language Day” held at the French University of Armenia.
