MEMBERS OF THE AGBU YEREVAN SCOUT MOVEMENT HELP

In November 2010, members of the AGBU Yerevan Scout group initiated a charitable project to help the children of the Gyumri F. Nansen orphanage and of poor and needy families living in Gyumri. Together with “Noyemi” NGO and “Fridtjof Nansen” foundation of Armenia the AGBU scouts announced a charitable gift drive to collect clothes, shoes and toys for the Gyumri children. Through AGBU’s worldwide network representatives of the Armenian community of USA and Syria also participated in the gift drive.

PAN YP PROJECT UNITES YOUNG PROFESSIONALS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

April 2010 saw the start of Phase 1 of the Pan YP Project in conjunction with YP Yerevan, CARD with the support of YP Groups from Buenos Aires, Brazil, New York, Los Angeles, Marseilles, North California, Philadelphia, Toronto and Frankfurt The project brought together these groups from around the world to fundraise and work together implementing an environmental project in Khachik village in Armenia. In a desolate area near an ancient church in the village, the AGBU Yerevan YPs, CARD Representatives, invited guests and the villagers planted 95 seedlings provided by the RA Nature Protection Ministry.

AGBU 86TH GENERAL ASSEMBLY CONVENED IN BUENOS AIRES

The 86th biennial General Assembly of the Armenian General Benevolent Union was convened in the capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires, on October 16, 2010. About 200 people including AGBU Central Board members headed by AGBU President Mr. Berge Setrakian, representatives of AGBU Chapters, authorized members and guests, from the Middle East, Europe, USA, South America, Armenia and other countries, gathered in Buenos Aires to discuss the past two years of activities of the Armenian General Benevolent Union. and outline the future plans under the limelight of new challenges. It was encouraged to give new incentive to the recent programs of the Union focusing on Armenia.

5TH PAN-ARMENIAN FORUM OF JOURNALISTS

The 5th pan-Armenian forum of journalists took place in the Culture and Youth Palace of Stepanakert from October 12-16, as part of the “One Nation, One Culture” festival. The conference entitled “Challenges of the 21st Century: Information Security and Armenian journalism” was organized by the RA Diaspora Ministry, Pan-Armenian Media Association and the Union of Journalists of Armenia. 200 Armenian journalists from 26 countries participated in the forum. Opening speeches were made by NKR President Bako Sahakyan and RA Diaspora Minister Hranoush Hakobian.

AGBU “DISCOVER ARMENIA” COMPLETES ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL SEASON

“Discover Armenia” is one of the most successful youth programs of the Armenian General Benevolent Union carried out in Armenia. Every year it brings together 15-18-year-old Diaspora-Armenian youth to spend unforgettable days in their homeland. For the seventh year in a row, this year AGBU’s “Discover Armenia” program brought to Armenia 31 participants from Canada, France, Greece, Lebanon, United Arab Emirates, UK and US. The program coordinated by AGBU Diaspora Youth Programs Coordinator in Armenia Hermine Duzian took place from August 7 to August 26.

AGBU SPONSORS THE FIRST PAN-ARMENIAN CHESS OLYMPIAD

 As part of the “One Nation, One Culture” festival the first pan-Armenian chess olympiad took place in Yerevan from August 15 to August 23. The joint initiative of the RA Diaspora Ministry and the Chess Academy of Armenia brought to Yerevan forty high-ranking Armenian chess players from Diaspora, Artsakh and Armenia. For most of them this was the first opportunity to visit their homeland. The first pan-Armenian chess olympiad was sponsored by Chairman of the Union of French in Armenia Raymond Yezeguelian, Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) and “Armavia” company. The total prize fund of the tournament, 22,000 USD, was provided by the AGBU.

FOURTH SEASON OF AGBU YEREVAN SUMMER INTERN PROGRAM

For the fourth consecutive year the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) held the Yerevan Summer Intern Program (YSIP) - one of the major Diaspora youth programs of the AGBU carried out in Armenia. Joining its sister programs in New York and Paris, the Yerevan Summer Intern Program was established in 2007. The goal of YSIP is to help Armenian college students of the Diaspora develop closer ties with their homeland and a better understanding of their roots, interact with their peers and get actively involved in cultural and professional activities in Armenia.

AGBU-AYA “VAHRAM PAPAZIAN” THEATER GROUP OF BEIRUT ON TOUR IN ARMENIA

Armenian General Benevolent Union-Armenian Youth Association’s “Vahram Papazian” theater group of Beirut was on tour in Armenia from July 3-10 as part of the RA Diaspora Ministry’s “One Nation, One Culture” festival. On July 4, the group presented Hakob Paronian’s “Shoghokort” (“The Flatterer”) in the packed hall of the Paronian State Theater of Musical Comedy in Yerevan. In charge of the production of the two-act comedy was professor Yervant Ghazanchian, who has been directing the group for the past decade. He is also the Artistic Director of the Paronian State Theater of Musical Comedy.

TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE VASKENIAN ACADEMY CELEBRATED IN THE MOTHER SEE OF HOLY ETCHMIADZIN

On November 4, His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians presided over a celebration dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Vaskenian Theological Academy at Lake Sevan. The celebration was held in the Pontifical Residence of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. Present for the celebration were AGBU Council of Trustees member and benefactor Karnig Yacoubian and his wife Anahit Yacoubian of Canada, AGBU President’s wife Mrs. Vera Setrakian, Mr. Vahram Nersissian of the Araratian Pontifical Diocese of Armenia, a member of the Supreme Spiritual Council, State representatives, Members of the Brotherhood of the Mother See and many guests.
