EDUARD MELKONIAN’S “AGBU HISTORY” PUBLISHED IN RUSSIAN

In October 2010, with the support of the Armenian General Benevolent Union’s Central Board of Directors, Senior Researcher of the Institute of History of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences, PhD, Eduard Melkonian’s “Armenian General Benevolent Union: Continuous History” was published in Russian at the “Tigran Mets” printing house in Yerevan. This edition is a translation of Melkonian’s “AGBU History” book published in Yerevan in 2005.

AGBU 86TH GENERAL ASSEMBLY CONVENED IN BUENOS AIRES

The 86th biennial General Assembly of the AGBU was convened in Buenos Aires, on October 16, 2010. About 200 people including AGBU Central Board members headed by AGBU President Mr. Berge Setrakian, representatives of AGBU Chapters, authorized members and guests, from the Middle East, Europe, USA, South America, Armenia and other countries, gathered to discuss the past two years of activities of the AGBU and outline the future plans under the limelight of new challenges.

AGBU BUENOS AIRES WOMEN’S COMMITTEE MEMBERS IN ARMENIA

Members of the AGBU Buenos Aires Women’s Committee were in Armenia from September 23 to October 5. As part of their trip the group visited Sevan, Dilijan, Tsaghkadzor, Haghartsin, Garni, Geghard, Sardarapat, Oshakan, Khor Virap, Noravank, Yerablur, Tsitsernakabert, Gyumri. On September 26, the Women’s Committee members were received by His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos and Supreme Patriarch of All-Armenians.

AGBU SCOUTS PARTICIPATED IN HAYORDINER SCOUT MOVEMENT IN ARTSAKH

Thanks to the efforts of “Haik’s Generation” youth organization the first scout camp opened its doors in Artsakh from August 3-10, marking the launch of the new “Hayordiner” scout movement in Artsakh. Senior scout leader Rubik Sardaryan from Tehran, the five-member delegation of the Armenian General Benevolent Union Armenia scout movement had arrived in Shoushi to support “Haik’s Generation” and the newly-established scout movement.

AGBU NAJARIAN-GULBENKIAN SCHOOL TEAM ANNOUNCED WINNER OF “HAY ASPET - SPYURQ” TV CONTEST

For five years now “Hay Aspet” educational program has been involved in instilling a love of homeland among the Armenian children. The AGBU Lazar Najarian-Calouste Gulbenkian School of Aleppo was also among the participants of this year’s “Hay Aspet-Spyurq” TV contest. Gaining victories over the other teams, they were announced the winners of the contest. The team also won the right to participate in “One Day of Childhood in Stepanakert” festival and a 7-day pilgrimage to Artsakh.

AGBU ARMENIAN VIRTUAL COLLEGE HOSTED THE PARTICIPANTS OF RA DIASPORA MINISTRY’S “COME HOME” PROGRAM

On June 30, AGBU Armenian Virtual College hosted more than 100 participants of the RA Diaspora Ministry’s “Come Home” program, who have arrived from different communities of the Diaspora, including Russia, Georgia, Canada, Lebanon and Syria, and will spend 2 weeks in Armenian families. Dr. Yervant Zorian, AGBU Central Board member and Founding-Chairman of the AVC, presented the potential of the online education system involving the youth in active discussions.

“COLORS OF ARMENIA” EXHIBITION DEDICATED TO THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF AGBU MARSEILLES HELD IN YEREVAN

An exhibition of Armenian contemporary art entitled “Colors of Armenia” opened at the Painters’ Union of Armenia on May 10 under the high patronage of the RA Diaspora Ministry. The exhibition was dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Marseilles Chapter of the AGBU. In her opening remarks RA Diaspora Minister Hranoush Hakobian spoke about the centennial activities of AGBU, particularly emphasizing the invaluable service of the Union in providing help to the orphans, the poor and handicapped in the period of 1914-1924.

AGBU MEMBERS AND FRIENDS VISITED TSITSERNAKABERT AND LAID A WREATH IN MEMORY OF THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE VICTIMS

On April 24, members of the Armenian General Benevolent Union Yerevan Scout movement, AGBU Young Professionals Yerevan team, AGBU and Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin Youth Center children and teachers, AGBU Armenia members, AGBU Armenian Representation staff visited Tsitsernakabert to pay tribute to the 1.5 million innocent victims of the Armenian Genocide and lay a wreath at the eternal fire to honor their memory.

MARGARET AJEMIAN-AHNERT’S “THE KNOCK AT THE DOOR”

A unique evening featuring Armenian-American writer, Winner of the 2008 New York Book Fair Award for Best Historical Memoir Margaret Ajemian-Ahnert took place at the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute on March 30, 2010. At the evening present were AGBU President Berge Setrakian, AGBU Central Board of Directors members Garnik Yacoubian, Vasken Yacoubian and Aris Atamian, other guests. Before the official ceremony, accompanied by AGBU Scouts, AGBU President Berge Setrakian, Margaret Ajemian-Ahnert laid wreaths on the Armenian Genocide Memorial.

AGBU-YSMU LEVON AND CLAUDIA NAZARIAN RADIOLOGY CENTER” OPENS IN YEREVAN

A radio-diagnosis and therapy center opened at Yerevan State Medical University on March 31. President of the RA Serzh Sargsyan was present at the opening ceremony. The ceremony was also attended by AGBU President Berge Setrakian, AGBU Council of Trustees member Nazar Nazarian, AGBU Central Board members Garnik Yacoubian, Vasken Yacoubian, Aris Atamian and other officials. The symbolic ribbon was cut by AGBU Central Board member Nazar Nazarian, his wife Artemis Nazarian and rector of the university Gohar Kyalyan. The AGBU has its unique contribution in the construction of the Center. AGBU Council of Trustees member Nazar Nazarian has donated 1,7 million US dollars to the Center.
