Interim Director of AGBU Armenia Hovik Eordekian, presented the Union’s past activities and its future plans at the Inter-Agency Commission Coordinating Syrian-Armenian Issues session held at the RA Ministry of Diaspora on August 27. The Union’s humanitarian mission to help Syrian-Armenian has a three directional approach: Syria, Lebanon and Armenia, raising an overall of 1,600,000 US dollars for the Syrian-Armenian Relief Fund. AGBU’s assistance falls within varies categories: apartment rent, medical assistance, food, fuel, agricultural machinery, scholarships, etc - to thousands of Armenian families in Aleppo, Damascus, Kamishli and Latakia, as well as thousands of Syrian-Armenians who have moved to Lebanon and Armenia. The RA Minister of Diaspora expressed gratitude and particularly mentioned that: “Since the beginning of the Syrian crisis, the Armenian General Benevolent Union has stood by our side and has already carried out several large-scale programs. It has also participated in the reimbursement of tuition fees for Syrian-Armenian students in Armenia.” President of Mission Armenia NGO, Hripsime Kirakosyan, delivered a report on the 2012-14 Programs to Support Syrian-Armenians. The completed activities and upcoming programs of Aleppo Compatriotic Benevolent Organization were presented by the organization’s president Ani Balekhian. In her summation, Hranush Hakobyan expressed gratitude to the speakers and the representatives of governmental agencies and NGOs for their efforts and stated that the Syrian-Armenians’ major issues of concern have been solved through combined efforts. The participants of the session took note of and approved the proposal by AGBU and the Aleppo NGO to support the implementation of the New Aleppo housing project.
