On May 23rd the Presidential Award Ceremony took place to coincide with Armenia’s Republic Day. Among the winners were two distinguished AGBU members. By the decree of the President of the Republic of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan, Nerses Nersoyan, AGBU Syria District Committee Chairman was awarded the Movses Khorenatsi Medal and Henry Arslanian, AGBU Aleppo AYA Executive Committee Chairman, the Mkhitar Gosh medal for their considerable contribution to the preservation of the Armenian Identity as well as supporting the development of Armenia-Diaspora relations. Nerses Nersoyan a prominent figure in the Syrian Armenia community is an agricultural specialist who graduated from the American University of Beirut. Nersoyan has been a top manager at the ICARDA agricultural company in Aleppo for many years and has played a significant role in AGBU and AYA by holding a number of executive positions. He has been the Chairman of the AGBU Syria District Committee since 2009 and has played a crucial part in coordinating the activities of AGBU’s Syrian-Armenian relief projects as well as the Syrian-Armenian Emergency and Recovery Fund. Henry Arslanian, a long standing member and a leading figure in AGBU and AGBU-AYA has been the Executive Committee Chairman since 2012. Arslanian is an architect and a graduate of the State University of Aleppo. He has also held various positions within the Union’s audit and accounting departments. He has made a significant contribution to organizing AGBU’s youth and sports activities and played an important role in carrying out aid projects for Syrian-Armenians specifically Aleppo-Armenians.
